Join us on the First Friday of every month for after-hours museum access and family-friendly fun! The July 7 evening includes an Introduction to Jazz by the John Rangel Quintet. Enjoy this unique opportunity to expand your knowledge of the instruments and rhythms of jazz while enjoying the new Centennial Exhibitions! We also have the honor of a visit from The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s mobile creativity studio, Art to G.O., who will host on-the-go art making and creative activities for participants of all ages.

About Art to G.O.

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s mobile creativity studio, Art to G.O., is coming to a location near you starting in April 2023! We have on-the-go art making and creative activities for participants of all ages and will be visiting libraries, community centers, schools, parks, senior centers, and festivals all year long. Non-profit and public service organizations anywhere in New Mexico can request a FREE visit by filling out the request form below.

John Rangel is a multi-talented musician of the highest caliber. Jazz pianist, guitarist, composer, producer and educator, Rangel has been a mainstay on the New Mexico jazz scene for more than 15 years. A classically-trained pianist, Rangel cites early influences from J.S. Bach and Stravinsky to Ray Charles, Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson.  Over his career he has explored a wide range of musical styles including Jazz, Classical, Film Music, Pop, Hi-Life, Salsa, Reggae, and Calypso. His versatility as a jazz pianist is evident in his work with artists as varied as Nat Adderly, Marcus Printup, Billy Higgins, Sam Rivers, Ravi Coltrane, Pharaoh Saunders, Bobby Shew, Tierney Sutton, Rosemary Clooney– and the full gamut of leading New Mexico jazz musicians.

Location: The Harwood Museum

Campers of all skill levels will spend two weeks at the Harwood Museum, creating digital works of art inspired by any of the 400 objects on display as part of the Harwood Museum’s 100-Year Anniversary. This could be a short documentary film, a dramatic re-enactment of a piece in full costume, a stop-motion animation – or so many other possibilities. Some students may want to choose digital illustration or even photography as a springboard for their inspiration. The best student creations will live on, with content accessed via a scannable QR code for museum goers.

Join UNM-Taos Librarians, Kathleen Knoth and Dave Mansfield, for a unique lunchtime program exploring the rare book collection currently on view in the Harwood Centennial exhibition. This program will begin in the gallery where a section of the original Harwood Library has been recreated and continue into the auditorium for a closer look at the selected books. Each session will focus on a different theme from the collection:

• (July 14) See the first editions collected by Mabel Dodge Luhan including works by Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, and Willa Cather.

• (August 11) Dig deep into the history of Northern New Mexico with both English and Spanish language texts exploring various aspects of the life and culture of this region.

• (September 8) Explore D.H. Lawrence’s manuscripts, correspondence, and posthumous papers from the personal collection of Frieda Lawrence.

About the Librarians

Kathleen Knoth, UNM-Taos Library Director, has been a professional librarian for over 30 years. She started the UNM-Taos library in 1995 and has managed several iterations of the space until 2022 when a new library was completed in the College Pathways to Careers Center building on the Klauer campus. Prior to UNM-Taos, Knoth worked as a children’s librarian in California and a special collections librarian at Millicent Rogers Museum. She currently oversees two fulltime paraprofessional staff and the operations of the Southwest Research Center of Northern New Mexico and the Senator Carlos Cisneros and Healy Foundation Water Archive. When not helping library patrons, Knoth enjoys walks with her dog, gardening, and all kinds of music.  

Dave Mansfield, UNM-Taos Library Services Coordinator, has been a professional librarian for 13 years and with the UNM-Taos family for 6 years. Coming from a background in art and music, he is still actively creating new works and performing with his band, which has been recording and performing original songs for over 30 years. He is currently earning his Masters in Library Information Science remotely at San José State University while living and working in Taos, NM.

In partnership with Taos Pride, taking place August 2-5, this Summer First Friday will feature a lecture by Christian Waguespack, Head of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of 20th Century Art at the New Mexico Museum of Art. Christian will share his insights into the history of Queerness in the New Mexican art world through his talk entitled Out West: Gay and Lesbian Artists in New Mexico, 1900-1969. August First Friday will also mark the opening of the second iteration of the Harwood 100 Open Wall,  honoring Harwood’s democratic origins and celebrating the creative power of our local, artistic community.

About the Lecture

Out West: Gay and Lesbian Artists in New Mexico, 1900-1969

For the better part of the twentieth century Northern New Mexico represented the possibility of a life that could not be lived elsewhere. It was, and remains, a place outside the norm, and this was particularly true for gay men and lesbian women in the first half of this 20^th Century. Queer communities played a significant role in developing the art communities throughout this region, although this influence is rarely acknowledged. Yet even in the most open communities, the impact of these early queer artists has yet to be fully recognized. In his engaging memoir Unbuttoned: Gay Life in the Santa Fe Art Scene, Walter Cooper laments: “So much of our queer history has been swept under the rug, it’s almost as if we never existed. People tend to underrate or ignore ‘the queer factor,’ the enormous impact gay folk have made on New Mexico’s unique cultural life.” This talk will survey the careers of gay, lesbian, and gender nonconforming artits acting in New Mexico during the first half of the twentieth century.

About the Speaker

Christian Waguespack is head of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of 20th Century Art at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe. In his over six years at the NMMOA he has organized over twenty exhibitions, conducts research on the Museum’s collection focusing on modern art, and art of the art of the American Southwest and has lectured widely on various aspects of New Mexican art history across the country.

His exhibitions at the New Mexico Museum of Art have included broad surveys of southwestern art history and deep dives into the careers of historic artists and art groups from the region. He also teaches in the department of Museum Studies and Arts Leadership +  Business graduate and undergraduate programs.

Waguespack holds Master’s degrees in Art History with a graduate minor in Arts Leadership + Business and a Master’s degree in Museum Studies form the University of New Mexico.
