Immerse yourself in the landscape that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe to paint her masterpiece, The Lawrence Tree, in 1929. Currently featured in the Harwood Centennial exhibition, O’Keeffe’s portrait of a magnificent ponderosa pine will serve as inspiration for taking a fresh perspective on landscape painting.
This four-hour workshop is offered in partnership with the D.H. Lawrence Ranch Initiatives at the University of New Mexico. It includes an art historical discussion by Harwood staff, a painting demonstration by Jivan Lee, and open painting time at the D.H. Lawrence Ranch.
Designed for beginner/intermediate painters with some technical knowledge or advanced painters. Materials are not provided. A list of recommended materials will be sent to all registered participants along with directions to the Ranch. Program will begin and end at the D.H. Lawrence Ranch.

About the Artist / Instructor
Jivan Lee is an oil painter based in Taos, NM. He grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting and environmental policy at Bard College. Following graduate school he sold cheese at the Union Square Farmer’s Market in New York City, taught for the University of New Mexico in Taos, and founded and directed the Project for Art and the Environment. Today the heart of Jivan’s work is an outdoor painting practice that explores time, change, and the complexities of how humans see and shape the environment. His work has been the subject of a number of solo exhibits and written about in Southwest Contemporary, The Santa Fe New Mexican, The Albuquerque Journal, Fine Art Connoisseur, Western Art & Architecture, and Phoenix Home and Garden among other publications.
