John Rangel is a multi-talented musician of the highest caliber. Jazz pianist, guitarist, composer, producer and educator, Rangel has been a mainstay on the New Mexico jazz scene for more than 15 years. A classically-trained pianist, Rangel cites early influences from J.S. Bach and Stravinsky to Ray Charles, Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson. Over his career he has explored a wide range of musical styles including Jazz, Classical, Film Music, Pop, Hi-Life, Salsa, Reggae, and Calypso. His versatility as a jazz pianist is evident in his work with artists as varied as Nat Adderly, Marcus Printup, Billy Higgins, Sam Rivers, Ravi Coltrane, Pharaoh Saunders, Bobby Shew, Tierney Sutton, Rosemary Clooney– and the full gamut of leading New Mexico jazz musicians.
Trumpeter Robert Beasley has backed up many touring artists, most notably Ahmad Jamal, The Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra and The Temptations, among many others. Bassist Cyrus Campbell studied performance and composition at the Berklee College of Music with luminaries like Bob Gulloti, John Lockwood, Ralph Peterson and Kenny Werner. Today he maintains a busy performance schedule in Santa Fe and beyond. Drummer Malachi Roberts has already made a name for himself with local and visiting artists in New Mexico. And this year brings in the newest players– saxophonist Dominic Martinez and violinist Ash Mattia. A current student of Rangel’s, Ash recently won 2024 Best Arrangement of an Original Recording from the NM Music Awards, and Outstanding Soloist from the 2024 Albuquerque Jazz Festival. Mattia’s instrument is an electric violin with a slender solid body and gorgeous natural sound. Together with Rangel, the Sextet performs uplifting original jazz compositions by Rangel, Beasely and Campbell, and arrangements from the classic jazz repertoire. They offer proof-positive that jazz isn’t just for people over 50. These young players revel in it– and so will you!
