Join Harwood Museum and Taos Center for the Arts for a cinematic exploration of the Black cowboy inspired by the exhibition Outriders Legacy of the Black Cowboy on view through May 7, 2023. From documentaries to vintage Westerns and major studio releases, this diverse line-up of films features fictional and true stories of Black resistance, joy, and life on the range.
This series pass includes admission for one (1) to each of the six screenings Outriders Film Series. Individual tickets to each film are available through the presenting organization’s website. Friday showings are at TCA and Sundays are at Harwood.

Taos Center for the Arts and Harwood Museum of Art present the Outriders Film Series exploring representations of Black cowboys on the big screen from the 1930s to today.
Buck and the Preacher, directed by Academy Award winner Sidney Poitier, tells the story of a wagon master and a con-man preacher who team up to defend freed slaves dogged by cheap-labor agents out West. The film features an all-star cast including Poitier as Buck, a former slave and Union Army Officer who meets Preacher, Harry Belafonte, while shepherding freed slaves across the West.

Taos Center for the Arts and Harwood Museum of Art present the Outriders Film Series exploring representations of Black cowboys on the big screen from the 1930s to today. Harlem Rides the Range features an all-Black cast starring Herb Jeffries’ as Harlem, a cowboy trying to help a homesteader from being cheated out of his property. Made when audiences and films were largely segregated by race, this was among the first Black westerns created during the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Taos Center for the Arts and Harwood Museum of Art present the Outriders Film Series exploring representations of Black cowboys on the big screen from the 1930s to today.
Set in New Mexico during the years 1912-1915, Thomasine and Bushrod is a Blaxploitation Western about a couple who ride through the Southwest shooting lawmen and sharing the riches with all. This film directed by Gordon Parks, Jr. was intended to be a counterpart to the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde.

Taos Center for the Arts and Harwood Museum of Art present the Outriders Film Series exploring representations of Black cowboys on the big screen from the 1930s to today. Black Rodeo captures the exuberance surrounding the performance of the first all African-American rodeo at Triborough Stadium on Randall’s Island, New York. Featuring music by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Little Richard, among others, Jeff Kanauw’s film includes an interview with Woody Strode and footage of Muhammed Ali riding a horse down 125th Street.

Taos Center for the Arts and Harwood Museum of Art present the Outriders Film Series exploring representations of Black cowboys on the big screen from the 1930s to today.
When an outlaw discovers his enemy is being released from prison, he reunites his gang to seek revenge. Loosely inspired by the lives of real nineteenth century cowboys and outlaws, The Harder They Fall stars Jonathan Majors as Nat Love, Idris Elba as Rufus Buck, and Zazie Beetz as Mary Fields. Photographs of many of these historic figures are featured in Outriders: Legacy of the Black Cowboy.
