CURRENT EXHIBITIONS:
CONTEMPORARY ART / TAOS 2020
On exhibition through Sunday, April 18, 2021
Exhibition Summary:
Contemporary Art/Taos 2020 is a juried exhibition to bring to light the unknown (and known) talent of artists living and working in Northern New Mexico or with deep roots in the region. Taos has long been known as a place where artists source creative inspiration and hunker down in
their studios building bodies of work that may never be shown in Taos, even if displayed in New York, L.A. London or beyond. In addition to an exhibition opportunity, this jury call gives Taos artists the opportunity to have curators and art experts from outside of New Mexico review their work. Those selected on a mix of creative expression, technical skill and innovation, will be included in the summer exhibition and one artist selected from this group will be invited to have a future solo exhibition at t he Harwood Museum of Art. As Taos launches into the next decade, Contemporary Art/Taos 2020 will serve as a litmus test of the living Taos Art Colony.
COMING EXHIBITIONS:
IN THE SLIVER OF THE SUN : MAJA RUZNIC
Saturday, March 6 - Sunday, September 26, 2021
Image Credits: Maja Ruznic, The Return, 2020, 100” h x 76”l, oil on canvas. Courtesy of the Artist and Conduit Gallery. Collection of Marguerite Steed Hoffman.
Exhibition Summary:
The works in this series, titled In the Sliver of the Sun, depict ghostly figures that arouse a sense of touch through erasure. Simultaneously fading into and emerging from the horizon, they seem to be returning from a long journey. Ruznic uses thin stains and washes of acrylic and oil paint to create the initial compositions for these works. She builds up the surfaces by scumbling and layering, then sands the dry paint to expose the tooth and texture of the canvas. This unique subtractive process leaves us with a sense of ghostly materiality—an undefined absence.
SANTO LOWRIDE: NORTEÑO CAR CULTURE AND THE SANTO TRADITION
Saturday, May 29 - Sunday, October 10, 2021
Hi Res Image - request
Exhibition Summary:
Santo Lowride: Norteño Car Culture and the Santos Tradition unrolls the unique story of New Mexico’s interwoven expressions of devotional art and lowrider culture. Just as the santos artists seek a physical channel between the heavens and their daily life, the lowrider has evolved as a modern-day vessel for the belief systems of multicultural Norteño communities. In this exhibition, santeros, santeras, and famed lowrider artists cruise low ’n’ slow side-by-side to make apparent how these two art forms share subject matter and religious function, binding them across past and present peoples.
