Cool School Art and Pueblo Pottery Highlighted in Taos Art Auction
Harwood Museum of Art fundraiser auction at Taos Ski Valley’s newest hotel

Taos N.M. May 31, 2017 – Larry Bell, Ken Price, Ronald Davis, and Dean Stockwell are four ex-pat L.A. artists whose work will be featured in “The Bash at The Blake,” a gala art event and auction on June 24, 2017 that will benefit the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos. In addition to works by these Cool School era L.A. artists, the Bash will auction a rare group of San Ildefonso Pueblo black-on-black pots by internationally renowned potter Maria Martinez. Exquisite pottery pieces from Acoma, Taos, and Santo Domingo Pueblos and a 5-foot panoramic photograph by Gus Foster of sunset on Highline Ridge in Taos Ski Valley are included in the auction list of 45 art objects.

The auction will be held at The Blake, Taos Ski Valley’s newest hotel, opened in February 2017. The Blake itself has a museum quality collection of works including works by early Taos Society of Artists and Taos Moderns as well as photography and Pan-Tribal pottery and textiles. The Blake’s art collection is but a single thread in a tapestry of architecture and design that celebrates and pays homage to the many historical and cultural influences unique to Taos and to Northern New Mexico. The Blake staff will provide guided tours of the collection prior to the event. Harwood Bash attendees are being offered a special group rate of $99 per night, not including taxes and resort fee, valid June 21 – 27.

In addition to Pueblo pottery and Cool School art, work by these artists will be auctioned: Gustave Baumann, J. Charles Berninghaus, Dorothy Eugenia Brett, Tom Dixon, Robert M. Ellis, Frank Ettenberg, Lola Huitt, Debbie Long, Bea Mandelman, Paul O'Connor, Louis Ribak, David Simpson, Earl Stroh, Michio Takayama, and Gregory Vose. Auction items can be previewed (or purchased on site) at the museum from June 18 to 23, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Remote phone bids accepted, call 575-758-9826 ext 112 to make arrangements.

The Harwood Museum of Art is a regional art museum of national importance. The museum is steward of the living legacy of arts and culture of Taos and northern New Mexico formed from the confluence of Pueblo, Hispano, and émigré Anglo traditions. Taos art is a response to a landscape of vast, imaginative force—sublime, humbling, and transformative—and its abiding local cultures. It is this Taos aesthetic that the Harwood preserves in its collection and honors through rotating public exhibitions and programs. The museum is located at 238 Ledoux Street in Taos and is open Wednesday through Sunday.
