Museum Open Limited Hours June 9-12

Repairs to the Harwood's exterior, generously funded by the New Mexico Legislature and the University of New Mexico, kick back into high gear this month. Because the repairs include extensive work on the Museum's front entrance portal, the Harwood will be open to the public on a limited basis from Monday, June 9 through and including Thursday, June 12. On those days public guided tours led by Harwood staff members will be offered at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the Museum will be closed to the public the rest of the time. No reservations are necessary for the public tours. Guided group tours outside those hours are available by contacting us at education@harwoodmuseum.org.

Thank you for your patience during this important maintenance work on our beautiful historic building!

SPIRIT OF NORTHERN NEW MEXICO CELEBRATED AT THE HARWOOD MUSEUM OF ART

Taos, N.M. -Red Willow: Portraits of a Town, Eah-Ha-Wa (Eva Mirabal) and Jonathan Warm Day Coming and Eli Levin: Social Realism and The Harwood Suite open at the Harwood Museum of Art Saturday, February 9 and will remain on view through Sunday, May 5, 2013. The exhibitions tell the stories of some of Northern New Mexico's most interesting people.

"We stagger the exhibitions at the Harwood in a pendulum type fashion-from Red Willow: Portraits of a Town which is home grown and local-to international and unexpected," says Harwood Museum of Art Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Jina Brenneman. "This spring, it's all about Northern New Mexico. Our permanent collection has a strong representation of traditional portraiture-many of which have not been out of storage. There are also some magnificent examples in local collections - and we have many generous lenders in this community. Each portrait in the exhibition is a narrative waiting to be told - both subject and artist are often important historic figures."

Gustavo Victor Goler was raised among bultos and retablos.

A child of a Santa Fe-based family of art conservators and restorers from Argentina, Goler apprenticed in the studios the family used for their work. He began his apprenticeship at a very young age, gaining incredible wood-carving skills by helping to restore 200-year-old carvings from throughout Spain’s former empire.

In high school he began carving santos. Santos are a traditional type of religious folk art common especially in Mexico and the U.S. Southwest. Typically, a santo is a Catholic saint represented as a painting on a wooden plank (retablo), a carved three-dimensional wooden sculpture (bulto) or within an altar screen (reredo).

With its high ceilings and broad wood floors, this museum is a lovely place to wander among New Mexico-inspired images. A cultural and community center since 1923, the museum displays paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, and photographs by Taos-area artists from 1800 to the present. Featured are paintings from the early days of the art colony by members of the Taos Society of Artists, including Oscar Berninghaus, Ernest Blumenschein, Herbert Dunton, Victor Higgins, Bert Phillips, and Walter Ufer. Also included are works by Emil Bisttram, Andrew Dasburg, Agnes Martin, Larry Bell, and Thomas Benrimo.

Harwood Art in the Schools
kids oli 1
Harwood Art in the Schools brings 22 classes of students from Enos Garcia Elementary School to the museum monthly throughout the school year to learn about art and have an opportunity for artistic expression. This program, now in its third year, works with children from pre-K up to 3rd grade.

"The 3rd graders have become very keen, savvy and sophisticated museum visitors," says Lucy Perera, Curator of Education and Public Programs. "They share insights and ideas about artwork in the Harwood's collection and exhibitions which, in my opinion, is on par with some college level art history majors. We encourage any Harwood friends to experience this program, either as a volunteer or just to see the excitement of this important program in action."

To arrange a visit, please contact the Education Department at education@harwoodmuseum.org. "Harwood in the Schools" is generously funded in part by New Mexico Arts.
