SOMOS presents: Cherie Burns, Diving for Starfish

Arthur Bell Auditorium

When Burns wrote a biography of Millicent Rogers (Searching for Beauty, 2011, etc.), she was especially intrigued by one particular item in her subject’s jewelry collection: a hand-sized starfish that featured “71 cabochon rubies and 241 small amethysts.” Certainly expensive, it was more valuable for its rarity and perfection. Only three were originally made in the 1930s and perhaps two more later....  The author takes the reader with her on her search to find the starfish and learn of all the hands they have passed through since the 1930s in Paris.

Cherie Burns' other books are Searching for Beauty—The Life of Millicent
Rogers (St. Martin’s Press, 2011), The Great Hurricane: 1938 (Grove/Atlantic),
and Stepmotherhood—How to Survive Without Feeling Frustrated, Left Out or
Wicked (Times Books). She lives in Taos, New Mexico.

Tickets are $8 for general and $6 for SOMOS and Museum members.
