Jazz: Dexter Gordon Project -This concert is Sold Out!

Arthur Bell Auditorium

Presented in partnership with Taos Jazz Bebop Society and the New Mexico Jazz Festival.

The Jimmy Cobb Trio featuring legendary drummer, Jimmy Cobb;
John Campbell, piano; and John Webber, bass, with Special Guest, Doug Lawrence
Music Instuments and equipment is provided for by John Trenacosta!

Saxophonist Dexter Gordon was a towering figure in 20th century jazz… widely regarded as the first musician to translate the language of mid-20th century modern jazz - a.k.a. "bebop" - to the tenor saxophone. Possessor of his own distinctive sound, Dexter was known for his heavy doses of swing. The Dexter Gordon Tribute stars some jazz legends in their own right: Drummer Jimmy Cobb and the great tenor-man, Doug Lawrence.

Jimmy Cobb is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands with Miles, John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. Among his many recordings with Miles is the masterpiece "Kind of Blue", the most popular jazz recording in history.
Here's what's been said of world-traveling sax man,
Doug Lawrence:
"Think of Coleman Hawkins, Louis Armstrong, Ben Webster, Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra. They were able to touch our collective soul with their extraordinary sense of phrasing. Tenor man Doug Lawrence has got it. His phrasing is fluid, relaxed, conversational and charming, just like his easy going, seductive Southern drawl."
