Carlos Rael Store Demonstration
Saturday, March 19 at 2:00pm
Demonstration by Santero artist Carlos Rael. Carlos carves his work by hand, and his bultos, retablos and crosses are all painted in the traditional way of the Spanish Colonial period. His gesso is homemade and he gathers and processes his natural pigments from earth, minerals and plants, with varnish from the sap of the pinon trees.
Carlos was born in Santa Fe and is a descendant of Alonso Rael de Aguilar, a member of the De Vargas Force in the reconquest of Nuevo Mexico in 1680.
